Daredevils

Written by Ellen Peterson

Performed by Cora Matheson & Michael Strickland

What compels a person to gamble their life for the sake of achieving the unimaginable? What inner force propels them to traverse a narrow rope, only two and a half inches wide, suspended 160 feet above one of the world’s mightiest waterfalls?

As Jean François Gravelet aka The Great Blondin prepares his next tightrope walk across the Niagara Gorge, he encounters an unexpected challenge: the young and – female – Maria Spelterini. Daredevils delves into the high-stakes world of tightrope walking, where the real tension isn’t just on the rope but between two relentless performers, each battling for control, fulfillment and for their deepest secrets to remain untouched.

  1. This show was the best one I saw at this year’s fringe. The acting was superb. Can’t say the same about the venue unfortunately. People in the middle row were packed in like sardines. (The venue was Up the alley at MTC) They shouldn’t squash in so many chairs and leave room for people to breathe.
That being said – the show was fabulous.

  2. I’ve seen the show twice now and it was even better the second time.
Michael’s delivery throughout the entire play is unmatched. His comedic timing is truly remarkable and is an absolute must see this year. Cora’s enthusiasm and ability to really bring this character to life was amazing to watch.
A true standout performance by both actors. Incredibly well done.

  3. This play introduced me to a bit of theatrical history and to the work of these amazing actors. Another great play by Ellen Peterson. You guys did good.

  4. Outstanding show! Cast chemistry makes the show. The show is extremely well written.

  5. OUTSTANDING 👏. A MUST SEE. From beginning to end you are taken to where you actually can envision the time, place and characters passions, adventure and fears. Kudos to Cora & Michael for an extremely entertaining and memorable performance 🙏.

  6. I’ve seen Daredevils twice. This is a remarkable show featuring two highly skilled actors. The dramatic tension creates a quick paced hour of entertainment. Daredevils is based on historic figures and captures a unique event in Canadian history. Congratulations.

  7. Saw Daredevil this evening, what a show. Michael and Cora play so well off each other. The storyline was entertaining and thought provoking. Definately a must see production.

  8. Daringly spectacular show! It is touching, thought provoking, and hilarious enough to make anyone laugh in an extremely French way (it’ll make sense once you see it). With only a couple shows left this fringe, those who catch this show can consider themselves part of a lucky few!

  9. I’m so happy I saw this. I would 100% see it again. It’s very clear that a ton of work went into the writing, directing, and acting. Cora Matheson and Michael Strickland were really interesting to watch; not only did they each have strong stage presence individually, but they had good chemistry together (and I enjoyed their comedic timing!) The characters’ dialogue went deep and made me think about life.

  10. Amazing skript that was performed brilliantly. Lots of cute moments with a mixture of comedy and puns.

  11. Daredevils totally blew me away! I wasn’t expecting to laugh that much at a show about tightrope walkers, but it was so witty…smart and funny. The chemistry between the actors was amazing, and the story had just the right mix of history and heart.

  12. The male actor gives one of the best performances I’ve seen not only at Fringe but in Winnipeg, ever. An absolute masterclass!

  13. Engaging interchange between two well developed characters. Interesting to explore the motivations that lead someone to risk their lives. Actors were adept at expressing the past, present and possibly futures of two complex characters. Makes you want to understand more about real characters this play is based on. Well done!!

  14. Very well written work beautifully performed. Matheson and Strickland were note perfect. Not to be missed!

  15. This show was playful and energetic with a level of sophistication that grounded the acting in the semi-realistic world they created. The audience is taken on the journey with ease and the highs and lows keep them engaged until the end. Definitely recommend this show for a break after something heavier.

  16. The chemistry between the co-stars and the physicality of their performances brought the tightrope walking to life for the audience.

  17. The cast delivers a tender and humorous performance. This show is playful and clever and knows itself well. Very delightful and a perfect fringe must-see!
