- Emil Amok Guillermo
Can a Filipino American help restore Canada’s faith in the US? He will try while laughing. In Emil Amok, 69, award-winning journalist Emil Guillermo, former host of NPR’s All Things Considered, goes amok when everything is flipped. Emil’s intergenerational tale of his father, colonized by America as “little brown brother,” and the story of his own trans daughter give insight into what Emil calls, a “69 world.”
About Emil’s shows:
“Comical, often profound observations.” – Manhattan Digest
“Standup, monologue, rant? Enjoy keeping pace with Guillermo’s brilliant mind…funny, poignant.” – Orlando Weekly
Spirit of the Fringe Award winner, 2024 New York City Fringe.
First time in Winnipeg, but after Emil Amok,69 will the US let him back in?
I found Emil the most engaging when he was telling his story earnestly, rather than worrying about tying everything back neatly to a central theme for the show. There were moments where he seemed to be trying a little too hard to take on the persona of a performer, but weaving through it all was a touching story, well worth seeing.
Comical and informative, not just a stand-up comedy but a storytelling.
Thank-you, Emil. Safe travels.
