The Tempestuous: A Shrew’d New Comedy by Will Shakespeare & Penny Ashton

  • Penash Productions

Award-winning Kiwi Penny Ashton (Promise and Promiscuity, Olive Copperbottom, Hot Pink Bits) is finally frolicking back to Winnipegshire, and this time she’s going full bard. She’ll spark 11 characters into life in an Elizabethan tale of magic, meddling and puffed bull’s pizzles that “Shakespeare himself would be proud of”. (Theatre Scenes)

Sicily’s beloved King Enzo is dead. Now Princess Rosa, a stroppy spinster, must navigate the tempestuous waters of belching Stepfathers, lusty suitors, popping codpieces and menopausal witches, to face her destiny.

4 STARS “sparkling” – The Scotsman

  1. Really enjoyed the show, Penny is able to keep all those characters in their roles while delivering a very well written, funny show. Her vocals and the music were a delight. I think she had as much fun as we did, would not miss this performance. Go and enjoy.

  2. Penny put on a great show for us. I am especially fond of the music she used in the show. I was surprised that she did not have a cd for sale of her performing the songs in the show.

  3. Wonderfully written and performed but at a pace that was much too quick for me (not length – it was 90 minutes)and complicated by not being able to hear all her words or to keep track of the many, many characters.

  4. Penny Ashton is an absolute powerhouse, with pitch-perfect diction, razor-sharp wit, and the manic, inexhaustible energy of a young, coked-up Robin Williams. Twirling and sashaying about the stage (and even performing the occasional push-up!) in a giant brocaded dress, she drags the audience head-first through a raucous, naughty, and supremely entertaining mash-up of Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night, MacBeth and everything in between that leaves no pun or innuendo unturned. Truly a must-see!

  5. It’s so great to see Penny back in town for the first time in forever. She has such a gift for giving each of the many characters she plays a distinct personality with the smallest of mannerisms.

    Don’t miss it

  6. Loved loved this show. Hilarious and wonderfully clever…Ashton sings, dances, inhabits multiple characters…

SO much talent! Go see this show.

  7. A terrific show. She used Shakespeare as a jumping off point ( throwing in well known quotes etc) but made the story her own. Her energy and ability to inhabit the different characters was impressive. Singing, dancing and spot on acting.

  8. This play was quite good! Very funny in all honesty. It was impressive how the performer managed to play all of the roles and keep them distinct; each individual character felt very separate despite this. A lot of the jokes were very well timed, with clever references and witty timing. I highly recommend this, especially if you’re a woman who likes Shakespeare.

  9. Absolutely brilliant. We saw Penny perform on night one & it’ll be a tough show to beat. Crackling energy & wit; if you love Shakespeare & seeing a pro work the stage and have obvious fun doing it, GO!
