- Good Grief
Ever feel like the universe has it in for you? New York’s award-winning storyteller Smita Russell knows the feeling. Drawn from events in her own life, Odds Are takes audiences on an extraordinary journey through love, loss, luck, medicine and myth.
You will laugh, you will cry, you will shout, “Oh hell, no. What did you do?!” Come for a show where humour meets heartache and discover why the most profound truths are the ones we can’t quantify. For anyone who’s ever experienced loss and come back for more.
In November 2024, Odds Are won Best Production and Best Director at NYC’s United Solo – the world’s largest solo theatre festival, before travelling to the Winnipeg and Edinburgh Fringes.
Jaw-droppingly good. We were blown away. It is a gorgeously layered show that will make you roar with laughter before breaking your heart. The live cello accompaniment was magical and the lighting superb. Bravo to everyone involved! Can’t recommend it enough. 10/10
Raw, real, and powerful. The violin underscoring added a lot without ever distracting. A really special show.
Simply sublime! An incredible story told with charisma and vulnerability. It’s the next Baby Reindeer, but better.
I didn’t know what to expect and was blown away. It was profound and captivating. Now I understand why the show description was vague. Odds Are is about being human, taking risks, finding hope and flipping the coin. How do you put that into words? Perfect ending. Perfect show. My wife and I have seen 18 shows this fringe and this was hands down the best one.
Extraordinary piece of art. In the spirit of the fringe I went because the poster caught my eye. Haven’t stopped thinking or talking about it. The play is dense with ideas, but they’re woven delicately and firmly like a spider’s web. I was riveted during the play and wanted it to be longer. I appreciated the strength, craft and the way Smita connected all the ideas in the following days. Best play I’ve ever experienced. Five stars.
The show’s description captures my feelings: “You will laugh, you will cry, you will shout, ‘Oh hell, no.” Smita is a master story teller. And the live cello in the background was icing on the cake.
Absolute perfection.
