- Stumble Upon a Story
Stumble Upon A Story’s The Monkey’s Paw – based on the horror story written by W.W. Jacobs in 1902 – is an intimate theatrical and literary experience. You will be transported into the eerie tale through masks, a stark set and an evocative soundscape that includes narration of the original story.
One night, a Sergeant visits the happy family home of Mister, Missus and their son Herbert, bearing a wrinkled paw, a tall tale and an unheeded warning to be careful what you wish for…

Creepy flow of scene’s and equally creepy costumes.
Eyeless masks with characteristics that reminded of the Little Nightmare video game villains.
Performed with creative passion by both performers.
BRAVO
This was a cool concept with brilliant masks but the lack of specificity in the movement distracted me from the story instead of lending to it. Is it mime? Is it Butoh? Suzuki? It wasn’t stylized enough to know.
The lighting. The masks. The eerie disembodied voice. Be prepared to be creeped out (in a good way).
Great as a short story, not great as a play. Actors don’t talk, the entire play is an audio voice over. At points voice over describes the character’s actions, only for the actor not to act out said actions. Felt like I was listening to an audio book
This was an unexpected delight. A unique take on W.W. Jacobs’ classic 1902 short story about being careful what you wish for, this show features actors in grotesque masks who silently act out the story over a recording of the original work. This gives the production the surreal, uncanny feeling of a puppet show or stop-notion animated film, which perfectly meshes with the gothic subject matter. My only complaint is that at only 30 minutes long, it’s over far too soon!
The performers attempted perhaps the impossible. Two actors trying to perform scenes that have 4 characters in them. Others may love this style of theatre but not for me.
