Third Party

  • Brighter Dark Theatre

A couple finds themselves caught in the web of a detective-turned-insurance adjustor, who will do anything to uncover the secrets they’ve been keeping from Manitoba Public Insurance – and from each other. The company that brought you House of Gold is back with a dark comedy that will keep you guessing until the very end.

5 STARS – Winnipeg Free Press 2024

  1. I love a pathetic snivelling man, a woman who is the worst, and the demon incarnate of Manitoba Public Insurance.
Jam packed, dynamic, and fun. Truly one of the greatest pieces of theatre I’ve seen in a while. Five stars, and a lot of laughs.

  2. Made me evil cackle the entire time. A clever script with great actors. MWAH. Please, please, please go see it if you have the chance. You won’t regret it.

  3. This was such an amazing show, the writer is so talented, especially acting in the show he wrote! All of the characters are all so captivating, the acting is amazing in this show! This is probably my favourite show I’ve seen this year!

  4. Playwright Thomas MacLeod has brought a witty and wholly unpredictable story to the Fringe for a second year in a row! Listen carefully for the jokes and lines that will keep you laughing long after the show is over. Be prepared for a descent into a little madness that is, on second viewing, wonderfully foreshadowed throughout the first 40 minutes.

Can’t wait to see what McLeod brings us next! Bravo!

  5. July23 at 5:00. 5 stars I loved this play. So many surprises and a lot of funny dialogue.
    Highly recommend!!

  6. Highly recommend, lots of laughs and I largely agree with the other comments here.

But a heads-up if you are planning to attend: when you enter there is an aisle that cuts across the theatre’s seating, get a seat on the opposite side of that aisle from the stage. The investigator character (who channels Ace Ventura, so some great mannerisms), performs for about half the show from that aisle. If you’re in the rows of seats between the stage and that aisle, his voice will be awkwardly behind you; or if you want to see him you’ll have to uncomfortably twist your back and neck. Rather unfair to those in the first five rows, would’ve been much better if he positioned himself on the front side of the stage so everyone could see.

  7. – ambitious writing and an original voice with an impressive joke to page ratio

    – a dramaturg might say “let it breath” but i say “dramaturgs can’t always be trusted, do what’s in your heart and be true to yourself like elle woods”

    – 45 mins, fast-paced & adhd friendly which makes it a great evening show when ur meds are wearing off and u need a lot of stimulation to focus

    – smart, sharp direction that respects the performers and supports the text rather than imposing upon it

    – strong triangle of performances where power and status are always being traded, fought for, and lost

    – the comedy in this play crackles like a (substantially less annoying and misogynistic) young david mamet.

    – hate recommending male playwrights but we’re certainly in chaotic glenglarry glen ross territory here and that’s a good thing

    – i’d be curious to see a version where the drama of the relationships is given a bit more weight. would an investment by in the audience in what’s truly at stake for the characters heighten the pathos and comedy even more?

    – don’t listen to me!

  8. Short, sweet, and completely out of its goddamn mind. Third Party is a hilarious 45 romp into a life of lies, deception, and expired licenses. Each of the actors shine in their role, really giving you the experience of a person you love to witness, but would hate to have to deal with. The character of Marty (whose actor’s name escapes me, sorry!) is especially delightful to witness, with amazing physicality and expertly-timed line delivery. Go watch 3 extremely strange people lose their minds for 45 minutes. You’ll love it.

  9. Fringe-Gold Should Not Miss It Show.
Alpha-male boyfriend, manipulator girlfriend, detective-adjustor : this show offers more than what you can expect.

  10. Take this opportunity to see Manitoba Public Insurance from a whole new perspective. We laughed so hard that we were blindsided by the ending.
