The Crown Witness Does Stand-Up is a dark, funny solo show from Winnipeg comedian Jeff Gobeil.
After reporting his childhood abuser to police, Jeff finds himself doing something he never expected: testifying in court. As the trial unfolds, Jeff processes the experience the only way he knows how — through comedy.
Blending courtroom testimony and stand-up, Jeff tells the story of trauma, survival, and what it means to finally speak up. The show is his victim impact statement in action. Part cross-examination, part stand-up and part inner monologue. This is a story about truth, resilience and finding your voice.
A little late for a review, with only one performance left, but this show has haunted me since I saw it 2 nights ago, and maybe a review will release this ghost.
My friend and I had seen Jeff open at Rumors Comedy Club multiple times and figured this was a safe bet for some laughs despite the dark subject matter. What we got was one of the best Fringe shows I have ever seen. I believe this is his first production, but it was well structured and he had the poise of a Fringe veteran due to his standup background.
Having watched childhood trauma cripple someone I loved years after the fact, it was truly inspiring to see Jeff focus that kind of trauma into a work of art that appeared to touch everyone in the audience.
Please be aware of and pay attention to the trigger warnings, but if you are able to see this, it deserves a full audience and you deserve the experience.
Jeff Gobeil is a master storyteller and I’m grateful for his skill because this is a difficult story. Honesty about hard topics goes down easier when humour is included and Jeff knows the balance. The care for the audience made this experience a safe place to stay present. The story and Jeff’s journey to get here is compelling, heart wrenching and courageous. The standing ovation was the least we could do.
Raw, unflinching, warm, welcoming storytelling. Jeff’s delivery brings the whole room to multiple belly laughs and stunned silences throughout the whole show. Thank you Jeff for this story.
